About the event

What is orthognathic surgery?

In the presence of skeletal problems in the adult period (after growth and development have ended), patients are treated with an approach in which orthodontic treatment and surgery are used in combination, called orthognathic surgery. These skeletal problems

  • Lower or upper jaw being forward than normal
  • Lower or upper jaw being further back than normal
  • Presence of severe anterior open bite
  • Chin or chin tip asymmetries

In this approach, first the teeth are corrected orthodontically, then the jaws are moved to their required positions with a surgery performed under general anesthesia, and after the surgery, orthodontic treatment continues for a while and final corrections are made. Total treatment time varies depending on the severity of the case.

What is reinforcement therapy?

The passive treatment phase, which prevents the teeth from returning to their pre-treatment state after the end of active orthodontic treatment, is called the consolidation or retention period. The appliances used during this period are passive and only provide fixation of the teeth. While non-movable transparent plaques are used, in many cases fixed reinforcement appliances called fixed retainers are used, which are attached to the inside of the lower or upper front teeth. In the presence of a fixed retainer, the patient must take careful care to maintain tooth and gum health. Although it may seem easy compared to the active period, it is a very important stage and should be implemented carefully.
