Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that deals with gum diseases. Inadequate or ineffective oral hygiene accelerates the development of gum problems. Gum disease is quite common in the population, affecting as much as 75%. When gum inflammation increases, it causes the bone tissue that holds the teeth to erode, and even if the teeth are not decayed, they become loose and can be lost. As gum disease progresses, it also negatively affects our overall health.
The first stage of an oral examination begins with visual and manual examination methods. However, an examination limited to these methods is never sufficient; our greatest aid in this regard is intraoral X-rays. If an X-ray is needed for a problem related to a single tooth, small films called periapical films are taken, of which there are two types depending on the case.
