PERIODONTOLOGY (GUM DISEASES)

Periodontology is a specialty of dentistry and is the branch of science that deals with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases on the gums, supporting tissues surrounding the teeth and jawbone. Specialists in this field are called periodontologists. Periodontology studies and treats a variety of diseases that affect oral health and can lead to tooth loss.

The main focuses of periodontology are:

  1. Gum Diseases: Gum diseases include conditions such as inflammation of the gums and gum recession. Gingivitis and periodontitis are among these diseases.

  2. Infections in Periodontal Cebular: The spaces between the gum tissues around the teeth and the teeth can cause periodontal pockets, and the accumulation of bacteria in these areas can lead to infections.

  3. Gum Surgery: In cases where gum diseases progress, periodontologists can perform surgical interventions. These interventions may include gum grafts, cleaning of periodontal pockets, and gum planing procedures.

  4. Implantology: Periodontologists can perform implant applications in case of tooth loss. Dental implants are used as artificial tooth roots that replace the tooth root.

  5. Periodontal Disease Prevention: Periodontologists educate patients about preventing disease and improving oral hygiene.

Periodontics is important for maintaining overall dental health and preventing tooth loss. Additionally, findings that periodontal diseases are associated with systemic health are also being investigated. Periodontal treatment is usually started by a dentist, but in advanced cases it may be necessary to seek the expertise of a periodontologist. Maintaining periodontal health is important for overall health and good quality of life.
